Lauryn Hill is making it clear that she doesn’t want her complicated history with Rohan Marley reduced to a simple story about a man who “destroyed” her.
The eight-time Grammy winner recently stepped into the comments of a social media discussion after influencer Mayowa shared her thoughts on Hill’s music, emotional struggles and longtime relationship with Marley.
Mayowa described Marley as a “tyrant” and suggested that he had played a major role in the pain reflected in Hill’s music.
She went as far as saying that Marley “destroyed” the singer. But Hill pushed back.
“I might agree with some of the self-deprecation part; there are reasons for that, but while Rohan and I were in a relationship I was NOT being done dirty,” Hill said.
According to Complex, Hill acknowledged that there was pain in their relationship, but she explained that her feelings were much more complicated than simply being mistreated by Marley.
“My upset had layers,” she said, pointing to Marley’s own struggles and his inability to confront certain trauma in ways she felt were necessary for their family.
Hill also emphasized that neither of them entered the relationship without emotional baggage.
“We don’t meet people as blank slates, they have pasts and past hurts,” she explained, adding that both of them were working through traumatic experiences when they met and were trying to uplift one another.
That perspective is important because Hill has spent years watching the public create its own version of what happened between her and Marley.

Rohan Marley and Lauryn Hill began dating around 1996–1997 and ended their romantic relationship in 2009. They share five kids: Zion, Selah, Joshua, John, and Sara.
Over the years, rumors surrounding their relationship have often painted Marley as the villain, but Hill has recently been more vocal about pushing back against that narrative.
In May, Hill shared a birthday tribute to Marley and acknowledged that the two had “been through a lot,” while also stating that he “never cheated” on her.
Her latest comments continue that same message: their relationship was complicated, but she doesn’t believe it should be rewritten as a story of Rohan Marley destroying Lauryn Hill.
“People may not be perfect in their walk but they can still battle with their own struggles and then make art about their battles and their victories that help liberate others too,” she wrote. “I personally look to afford people grace when and wherever I can.”
And perhaps that is the biggest point Hill is making. A painful relationship doesn’t always have one villain and one victim. Sometimes two people can love each other, hurt each other, struggle with their own unresolved issues and still have a meaningful impact on one another’s lives.
For Hill, it appears she would rather tell that complicated truth than allow social media to tell the story for her.
