Iman Shumpert is reflecting on love, marriage, and the lessons that came with both.

During a recent appearance on Club Shay Shay, the former NBA champion shared what he believes was one of the biggest misconceptions he had before getting married.

According to Shumpert, he once believed marriage automatically represented a deeper level of love, but over time he realized that’s not necessarily the case.

“The biggest thing I learned is when you get married, you think it’s a new level of love. A lot of people think you get married, and now she finna love you way more on the other side of this, and it’s like hell nah. The honeymoon stage is not love; it’s like.” Shumpert stated.

He also explained that people often believe love comes eight times stronger after tying the knot.

“You get the ring, you do this, it’s like you’re going to get a whole new bounce in your step. It’s like, hell no. Ain’t nothing going to change. It’s a piece of paper. “

Shumpert also reflected on how his views have changed following the end of his marriage to singer and actress Teyana Taylor. He admitted the experience reshaped how he thinks about marriage and even questioned whether he would legally marry again in the future, saying he would instead consider a different type of contractual commitment.

Taylor and Shumpert first met at a party in 2011, where he immediately tried to approach Teyana. Unfortunately, she turned him down because she was dating someone else. Over the years, they remained acquaintances and stayed in touch.

Their relationship deepened around 2013, when Taylor adjusted her schedule to help Iman after his knee injury. The pair went public with their relationship on Instagram by 2014.

Right after going public with their relationship, they had their first baby and got engaged back in 2015. Reports say they low-key tied the knot in 2016, announced baby number two in June 2020, and eventually called it quits in 2023.

While it’s easy to assume that infidelity was the key factor, Taylor addressed that it wasn’t the case for them.

“In all fairness, Iman and I are separated and have been for a while. To be 1000% clear, ‘infidelity’ ain’t one of the reasons for our departure,” Taylor clarified on a now-deleted Instagram post. “We are still the best of friends, great business partners, and are one hell of a team when it comes to co-parenting our two beautiful children.”

The former couple finalized their divorce in 2024 while sharing two daughters. As part of their divorce settlement, Taylor received four luxury properties valued at over $10 million, multiple luxury vehicles, and retained 100% ownership of her companies and business ventures.

Despite the challenges, Shumpert’s latest comments focused less on blame and more on the personal growth that came from the experience.

His candid remarks have sparked plenty of conversation online, with some agreeing that marriage doesn’t automatically strengthen a relationship, while others believe marriage can deepen love when both partners continue choosing each other every day.
